About
Tom Bennett – a beginner’s guide
I find writing ‘About’ pages tough, and so i’ll keep it short and sweet.
I graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 in Physics Msci from the University of Nottingham. Knowing that I didn’t really want to continue into PhD-dom I started job hunting and began work as an IT techinician at a large grammar school in Bucks. This gave me the opportunity to gain some knowledge into network management, general helpdesk/helldesk queries, a little bit of coding in VB.NET and ASP.NET and build on some of the wireless networking/design skills i’d gained at University. It also gave me the chance to dabble in some external consulting, mainly for smaller middle and primary schools in the area. After about a year of this, I felt that it was time for me to move on…
Which leads me/us to now. I currently work as the IT Manager for an SME Research/Recruitment firm in London. By IT Manager, I mean network and system admin, voice, helpdesk/support and general handyman- i.e. if it has a switch, it seems it’s my domain. At the moment I’m unbelievably busy, which is a good thing, and having been thrown in at somewhat of a deep-end i’m beginning to make some changes that will benefit the business over the longterm. Air conditioning in the comms room for one (don’t ask).
Things that i’ve been thinking about / books that i’ve reading recently include:
- Virtualisation, particularly VMware Server and VMware Player
- Backups and Recovery
- Lots of lovely Dell computers (particularly OptiPlex 745 USFF and Latitude D620’s)
- Digital photography Most of my photos get posted on Flickr
